Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali
Hujjat al-Islam · the 13th master — fountainhead of the path
The Mursyid of Al-Ghazaliah
As-Syarif As-Sayyid Haji Lokeman Hazli bin Azali As-Seggaf an-Naqsyabandi al-Khalidi wal-Ghazali wasy-Syadzuli
As-Syarif As-Sayyid Haji Lokeman Hazli bin Azali As-Seggaf is the 40th Mursyid of the Thariqah al-Ghazaliah, and a bearer of the Naqshbandiyya-Khalidiyya, Ghazaliyyah, and Shadhiliyyah paths. Of the noble As-Seggaf family of Hadhrami Sayyid descent, he was born in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.
He received his secondary schooling at the King Edward VII School in Taiping, and his religious education in the traditional pondok of the Malay Peninsula and in Syria — studying with sanad under many ulama, among them his first teacher Tuan Guru Hj Sufyan Nur, and masters whose chains reach back to Tok Kenali, Syeikh Abdullah Fahim, and Syeikh Abd Wahab Rokan.
A few months before Tuan Guru Hj Tahir Aidin (the 39th Mursyid) returned to Allah in Ramadan 2006, he raised him to be the 40th Mursyid of the Thariqah al-Ghazaliah. Devoted to da'wah, he founded the Persatuan Moral dan Pembangunan Insan Malaysia (PMPIM) in 2001, and teaches widely — guiding seekers in vocal dhikr (jahr), khalwat, and the purification of the heart, upon the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah.
At the heart of the Syeikh's guidance is the Thariqah al-Ghazaliah — rooted in the path of Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, the 13th master in the silsilah stretching from the Prophet ﷺ through Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Talib and Hasan al-Basri to al-Junaid al-Baghdadi and thence to Imam al-Ghazali. The hallmark of this path is dhikr jahr — vocal remembrance — through which the heart is polished and the Divine Presence is made perpetually near.
He teaches the refinement of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs), khalwat (spiritual retreat), and strict adherence to the outer Shari'ah as the necessary vessel of the inner path. As a bearer of three turuq — the Ghazaliyyah, the Naqshbandiyya-Khalidiyya, and the Shadhiliyyah — his teaching draws from the breadth of the Sufi tradition, always upon the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah.
